Now that BBQWhiskyBeer have become winners of 2013’s Ribstock I can’t give this post any other start than, ‘HOORAY. Well done you lovely people!’  They absolutely smashed it at Ribstock, an annual event that brings together 10 renowned chefs/restaurants to pitch their best rib dish for ticket holders to taste, analyse and grade. These events are seriously popular in the food scene right now and their amazing dish of mesquite-smoked black angus beef rib, texas rub & BBQWhiskyBeer sauce served with pickles and a poky beef stock based bloody mary stood up to the high standards and immediately sparked a twitter frenzy of praise. Winning the majority vote for best dish, they took home the £3k prize, a lot of street food credit and hopefully a whole host of new customers for their pop up restaurant in the Wargrave Arms where I recently went for dinner.Jacobs ladder After my visit to the lovely pub tucked behind Edgware Road, I couldn’t stop talking about the ‘Jacob’ Rib that me and my friend practically hoovered up in minutes. Cooking ribs is where the team have got it serioulsy right and as the restaurant expands, I really hope it’s where they pitch their speciality. ‘The Jacob’ (£12)was a huge ladder of beef rib which had same smokey but sweet quality as the one served at Ribstock. Every single slither of meat fell off the bone with no effort at all.Chicken wingsWe also shared a portion of spicy chicken wings (£6) which were seriously hot and tasty and went perfectly with the accompanying blue cheese sauce (which we could have done with more of). Unfortunately they took almost an hour to arrive and although the bar was busy, it felt like the staff weren’t really coping with the increasing number of orders. A couple of gins later and a friendly apology for the slow service and we were back on track with a Classic Burger. Burger It was a bargain for the whopping 7oz beef patty served with both bacon & cheese (£8) but it didn’t live up to the flavour of the other dishes and just wasn’t particularly exciting. The bun didn’t hold everything together and I found myself getting very messy and a little bored quite quicky.Sundae I fell in love with the place all over again whilst chatting about the restaurant and it’s aims (one of which at the time was simply to get to Ribstock) with Sam the founder and digging into an incredible Cornflake Sundae which layered ice cream, both chocolate and dulche de leche sauce and crunchy cornflakes.

If I hadn’t vowed to a week of vegetarianism following Ribstock and a Sunday spent making Hawksmoors beef shin macaroni, I’d be back to BBQWhiskybeer for the ribs and that Sundae in a flash. Don’t forget to congratulate the team on your visit!
